From February 14 to 16, 2025, the historic streets of Stone Town, Zanzibar, came alive with the vibrant rhythms of the 22nd edition of the Sauti za Busara music festival. Under the resonant theme “Voices for Peace,” this year’s festival reaffirmed its status as one of Africa’s premier cultural events, celebrating the continent’s rich musical heritage and its power to unite diverse communities.

The festival commenced with a dynamic carnival parade weaving through Stone Town’s narrow alleys, featuring traditional horn players, drum ensembles, stilt walkers, and dancers. This procession set the tone for a weekend filled with performances that spanned genres and generations. Artists such as Thandiswa Mazwai from South Africa

and Blinky Bill from Kenya headlined the event, delivering powerful performances that echoed the festival’s central message of peace and unity.

Beyond the main stage, Sauti za Busara offered a platform for emerging talents and fostered cultural exchange through workshops and collaborative sessions. Initiatives like the “Swahili Encounters” facilitated collaborations between artists from different backgrounds, resulting in unique fusion performances that captivated audiences.

The festival’s commitment to inclusivity was evident, with discounted tickets for Tanzanian citizens and free entry for children under 12, ensuring that the event remained accessible to local communities.

As the final notes faded into the Zanzibar night, attendees departed with a renewed sense of hope and a deeper appreciation for the unifying power of music. Sauti za Busara 2025 not only celebrated Africa’s diverse musical landscape but also reinforced the continent’s enduring message of peace and solidarity.
